My own experience of planning a long distance walk includes hours of trawling the internet and fruitless telephoning. I hope this site can do something towards making the task less tedious.

Keeping up-to-date - how you can help

The great problem with providing any resource that includes accommodation is that the information provided, to remain of any value, needs continuous updating. Good places close or change hands, and bad places improve. If it is to be a reliable source, these pages are going to depend upon your help.

I have walked the route three times now, and each time, in order to keep the cost down I have carried a tent with me. The coast of Dorset, being a holiday region is well endowed with places to stay and no difficulty should be experienced, the North of the county is a different matter. Even campsites are few and far between. The one bed and breakfast I did use, and a very good one it was, was the Shepherds Farmhouse in South Perrott, a year later and I see it is now for sale. I just hope someone sympathetic to walkers is tempted to buy it.

Recommendations please!

If you run an establishment, or know of good, reasonably priced places to stay that are close enough to the route of the "A Round Dorset Walk" to be of value to a walker (whose only transport is those same two weary legs that have carried them thus far), please let me know. There is no shortage of pubs in Dorset, and many provide accommodation. The price may be a little higher than a traditional B&B, but they may well provide the refuge and comforts you seek.

The major towns encountered on the route offer a wide choice, but I include here some of those I have frequented or those slightly off the beaten track.

Woolsbridge Manor Farm Caravan Park is nestled in the heart of rural Dorset, and with magnificent beaches and the New Forest within easy reach, it is a stunning place to holiday. The caravan park is part of a 100-acre, family run, working farm in the village of Three Legged Cross. The park is level and sheltered in a quiet country setting. The pitches are very spacious, on average 40 feet apart, and most have electrical hook up facilities, which in peak season are usually booked in advance.

Perhaps, unsurprisingly, with awards from the AA and the English Tourist Council, Woolsbridge Manor Farm is one of Dorset's most popular caravan parks. It makes an ideal base for exploring the county's rolling countryside and sites.

Hillside Camping and Caravan Site has been established for 26 years and over this period has built itself an excellent reputation for a warm welcome and friendliness. We are a Camping and Caravan Club Certified location and are for Members only. If you are not a member, you can join upon your arrival or join before hand via our website.

Peacefully nestling in the Ringwood Forest, at Verwood, with direct access to many lovely walks through the forest and villages, yet just 10 minutes walk to shops, amenities and pubs. Camping allowed only at perimeters of site, central area kept clear for safe, visible recreation. No noise after 9.00pm (talking etc. accepted), clean short grass. Ideal base for photography, painting, nature and wildlife. Family and children friendly. Approximately 10 yards between units. Established in 1978. Awarded - "Your place in the Country" and "Star rated" for recommendations by the Camping and Caravanning Club...also "Certificate of excellence for World Wide standards of Welcome," by the New Forest and Bournemouth Tourism Board.

Church Farm Campsite is a quiet, family owned campsite situated in the Cranborne Chase, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty in a village called Sixpenny Handley. The site is on an arable farm owned by Steve Judd & family, who extend a friendly welcome to caravanners and campers alike.

The site is located within 300m of the village centre which has a variety of shops and a public house offering a varied menu. The surrounding area is perfect for long country walks and the views from the site are truly excellent. Church Farm is an ideal site for those wishing to tour the local area with the historic towns of Salisbury, Blandford Forum, Wimborne Minster and Ringwood in close proximity. If you head for the coast - Poole, Bournemouth and Southampton are only a 40 minute drive away.

This family run site with level, easy access, is in Thomas Hardy country close to the famous Gold Hill and Abbey ruins of Shaftesbury. The scenery of Dorset is greatly admired, Stourhead, Salisbury, Longleat and the Great Dorset Steam Fair (August only) are within easy reach whilst Bath, Dorchester and Bournemouth are under and hour away by car.
